TIN Validation

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is used to record amount of income earned and report the same to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). There is a variety of Tax Identification Numbers that people can apply for depending on their situation. The steps involved in the TIN application process are quite simple. The forms to be filled can be obtained from the IRS website.

Request a Social Security Number (SSN).

This can be obtained by all legal US citizens. Eligible American citizens can get this type of Taxpayer Identification Number by filling out Form SS-5. Individuals who require a SSN include newborn babies and those who have recently become US citizens.

Request an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

This is used by businesses to report the amount they have earned to the IRS. Those who are establishing a new business need an EIN. This can be obtained by filling out an application online through the IRS website. 

Apply for an ITIN. 

This stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number given to resident as well as non-residents spouses. It is also used to report income to the IRS. This can be obtained by filling out the W-7 from. This form can be downloaded from the IRS website.

Requesting an ATIN

This should be filled by individuals who are in the process of adopting a US citizen. This number can be obtained by filling out the W-7A from available in the IRS website.

Requesting a PTIN

This number should be obtained by tax return preparers paid for their work. The importance of this number is that it prevents taxpayers from using their own social security numbers when preparing taxes for other people. This number is obtained by filling out the W-7P form available at the IRS website.

It is important that individuals applying for EIN be owners or partners of the company. They will require having a social security number for the online application. If one is not sure about the details to input in a certain field during the application process, they shouldn’t leave them blank; contact the IRS for clarification. This will help them avoid delays in the processing of their application materials.
