Engagement letters are commonly employed by a variety of businesses to ensure the protection of critical operations, but they are most important in the legal industry. Attorneys set the terms of their representation in such documents, and explicit, specific language is always required. To ensure all bases are covered, consider the following tips when drafting an engagement letter.

1.) Simple, honest language - Always remain inherently truthful regarding the services you plan to provide. Do not embellish or use overly descriptive language, as this could lead to misinterpretation and possible legal consequences.

2.) Scope of services - This is the section that should be the most detailed, and don't skimp on the specifics - establish exactly what services you will provide and leave no room for questions.

3.) Services not provided - In the same vein, if you can imagine any questionable activities, be sure to define what you will not be doing. Lawyers engaging in a financial litigation suit, for example, will not be required to handle clients' bank accounts.

4.) Include fees and desired payment method - Writing your required legal fees down in a document ensures that there will be no conflict when your services are completed.
